Dr. Archer runs a successful marriage counseling service. He has helped hundreds of couples turn their relationship around by teaching good old-fashioned values with a good, old-fashioned spanking.

But in an effort to prevent problems in the first place, he has started a singles club, to help couples learn better ways to relate to one another and how to communicate. He doesn’t promise that every program participant will find love, only that if they make a commitment to finish the program, they will find themselves more loveable.

Follow three women, and the men they are partnered with for the class, as they go through the assignments.

Bit by bit, they learn to change the things they don’t like about themselves, accept the things they can’t change, and learn to love themselves. Will any of them find true romance soon?

Shannon watched anxiously as Dr. Archer introduced each woman to her class partner. The short little twit with the long black hair got to go with her boyfriend, which seemed unfair to Shannon. No one else in the group had a current ‘significant other’. If they had, they wouldn’t be taking a class specifically designed for singles.

Jennifer something, the homely wallflower, was partnered with a big, football?type jock and Penny, a thirty?something divorcee was paired with Paul Fronk, a fifty?something widower with grown children. Shannon had hoped that the counselor would have used the extensive information he’d gathered from all those forms she’d had to fill out to pair her with someone she might at least find remotely attractive, but these pairings seemed to have no rhyme or reason. She lost all hope when she heard him call her name.

‘Shannon, I’d like you to meet Joseph Cantrell. Joseph, Shannon will be your partner for the rest of class.’

The guy was huge. Not overweight, really. But massive shoulders, thick arms, and the biggest pair of hands she’d ever seen. His chest was bigger than broad. He’d wear a double?x if he bought clothes that fit, the skin?tight tee shirt he had on was obviously several sizes too small. But all that mass dwindled down to fairly lean hips, a rounded, cute butt, and long, muscular legs. She was not a small woman, but she had to tip her head back to look him in the eyes. She felt petite by comparison.

‘Good eve’nin’, miss,’ he said politely, his voice surprisingly soft and gentle for his size.

‘Hello,’ she answered.

Dr. Archer patted his shoulder and gave her a fatherly pat on the back before he left them alone. Shannon watched him go with a feeling of dread. It had been a stupid impulse when she’d added her name to the waiting list last fall. She’d read the material, and was alternately aroused and repulsed by it. The thought of a grown woman being spanked like a little girl was ridiculous. She didn’t know what kept her from dropping, and when she’d been notified that the next session was about to begin, instead of telling him she’d changed her mind, she’d gone ahead and paid for it.

That was the clincher. She’d had to pay for all ten weeks in advance, and sign a contract that she’d complete the course. The counselor had been quite insistent about that. He’d said that some of the lessons might be challenging, but if she’d stick to it, she should be happy with the results.

He hadn’t actually promised that she’d find someone to love. All he’d said was that she’d find herself more loveable. He’d included a handout with comments from former satisfied customers, though, and she’d met a few of them herself. Two women she worked with bragged about meeting their husbands through Dr. Archer’s singles club, and a third told how he’d helped her to stay married when she discovered her honeymoon was over.

‘So what can you tell me about yourself?’ the man asked.

Shannon blushed, ashamed that she hadn’t been listening to him. ‘Um. I dunno. Like, what do you want to know?’

‘Well, Shannon. Why don’t I go first, then? I work in construction. Currently we’re building the new high school in Iron River. My wife and I split up four years ago, and I have sole custody of our daughter, Kaylee, who is six.’

Shannon studied him as he spoke. His voice just didn’t fit his face. If he’d called her on the telephone, she was sure her heart would be making pit?a?pat rhythms that made it hard to breathe. His voice was deep and soft, and cultured sounding, like imported chocolate. By contrast, hers was a little shrill.

‘It must be hard,’ she said. ‘Raising a daughter alone.’

‘I don’t suppose raising kids is ever easy. But she’s a real sweetie. In first grade this year, and as smart as a whip.’

Shannon had a sudden image of a whip being used for an entirely different purpose. This class was getting to her. Only one session down and already she was having thoughts of kinky sex.

‘Now, it’s your turn,’ he encouraged.

Shannon shrugged. ‘Not much to say. I’m twenty?eight, never been married, no long?term relationships, just college, grad school, and work. I’m pretty close with my mom, but I see a lot of her in me, and she’s still single. I want something more.’

He was talking again, but Shannon’s mind wandered. She glanced at the other couples, all going through the same awkward first steps. The timid little woman was blushing scarlet, but she kept glancing up at her partner with something akin to worship. The brassy snot looked scared, though. She must have done something to piss off her boyfriend. Shannon wondered if he would begin the spanking lessons yet tonight. Excitement raced through her, hot nerves and burning interest.

‘I’m sorry,’ Shannon interrupted. ‘I wasn’t listening. It’s very distracting here.’

Her partner scowled. He straightened, growing another inch taller. Shannon resisted the temptation to cringe. She’d cowered from no man, and she was not about to start now.

‘Let’s try again,’ she said, blathering on. ‘I went to college in La Crosse, right after high school. I had a full scholarship, but had to borrow for grad school. I still owe on that, but not much. It’s really something, isn’t it? You go to school to get a better paying job, but when you start paying off those loans, you’d almost make more if you had just worked at McDonalds all your life!’

Shannon knew she was rambling. She did that. Especially when she was nervous. She could talk and talk and not ever really say anything. It reminded her of an English assignment she’d had once ? to write a 500?word essay and not say a thing. It had been a backward exercise, as the point was really to learn how NOT to write essays. It was one of her most annoying habits, this rambling. Even her thoughts were rambling, she realized with a dry laugh.

Joseph Cantrell smiled and nodded. He was listening, but he didn’t really look interested. A couple times he opened his mouth, but short of just barging in, she gave him no opportunity to join the conversation. Shannon’s throat was getting dry.

‘How about we go for a drink somewhere, Simon’s, or Mill Bluff? It would give us a chance to talk in a more private setting,’ he finally managed to say.

‘Simon’s would be fine,’ she said hesitantly. Joseph was, after all, a stranger. Surely Dr. Archer wouldn’t intentionally take any nut cases, but her mama hadn’t raised an idiot, either. ‘I think we should go in separate cars, though. I can go home straight from there.’

Joseph actually smiled, which transformed his face. He had a fantastic smile, even teeth, sensual lips. His eyes were dark, piercing almost, as though he didn’t miss much. ‘That’s a good idea,’ he said gently. ‘Until you know me better. I’m glad you’re careful.’

He put his arm around her then in a possessive gesture that had her dander up, yet at the same time she had jumbled thoughts of kissing, spanking, and passionate making up. It had been too long, she thought, disgusted with herself. And it would not happen with this giant. He wasn’t her type. She went more for refined, educated, intelligent men. Too bad she lived in such a small town, where the pickings were rather limited. If her position at the bank weren’t such a good one, she’d ditch Murphy in a heartbeat and look for greener pastures down around Madison. Or Chicago.

Of course, in a bigger city, the competition was significantly tougher. Maybe being a big fish in a small pond wasn’t so bad.

‘We’re leaving,’ Joseph told Dr. Archer. ‘See you next week.’

Dr. Archer gave them a knowing smile. He seemed a tad arrogant, Shannon thought, and wondered what assignment he’d given the men. Her own assignment, listing five things she liked and disliked about herself, seemed rather juvenile. Something the guidance teacher in sixth or seventh grade would have assigned. At least it wasn’t going to be too difficult. She liked herself. She knew her weaknesses, and she could live with them.

‘Like, what else,’ she muttered, as she saw Joseph climb inside a shiny, gray truck with black and silver pin?striping. Not something sexy, like a corvette, or wild like a motorcycle. Just a hokey pick?up, like all the rest of the would?be small?town rednecks in central Wisconsin. She turned the key and started her little Saturn Ion. It got good gas mileage, and she could afford the payments. That made it the perfect car for her. Besides, the garage mechanics in La Crosse were cute, efficient, and treated her like visiting royalty instead of a brainless female.

Really fun book with three short stories included that really make you laugh and keep your interest right to the end. My only complaint is that I too wish it had been longer.

I just finished the book and I really enjoyed it! The concept of a singles club where men could go to learn to be HOH and women could learn to be submissive and leave in a DD relationship is really fun!! I really really liked the first and last stories. The second one didn\\\’t do much for me but that is just me. Courage is one of my favorite authors and the stories are always good! The last story of Derrick and the Mouse with him as a gentle giant learning how to be strict without fearing being abusive and she is learning to be assertive. My only complaint is that I wish they were longing…maybe the author will write a follow up. Oh and now I have to buy the Sky and River books since they are also in the singles group and now I want to know their story too 🙂

I\\\’m a fan of the Marriage Counselor series, and was anxious to read this one. I agree with the other reviewers that I would much rather have seen longer stories. These stories only gave us a look at the first week of the singles club 10 week course, so I\\\’m hoping to see more of these couples. I really enjoyed all three stories, and thought the second one was very creative, but I loved the first personalities of the couple in the first story.
