When Gretchen Altman’s husband Benjamin dies in an accident, she is left alone to raise their young son and run the horse farm he started with borrowed money – or so she thinks. On the day of the funeral, a stranger appears and lays legal claim not just to the farm but to Gretchen and her young son as well.
Kane Altman claims to be her late husband’s brother, but Gretchen realizes he is as different from Benjamin as night is from day. Where Ben was short, fair and gentle, Kane is tall, dark and stern. He has definite ideas about how a wife should behave and makes it clear that he will enforce his authority with corporal punishment should she defy him. For a headstrong woman like Gretchen, adjusting to the new rules and expectations will not come without painful consequences. But even as she struggles to obey, she is plagued by doubts. Kane Altman is keeping something from her, and she soon begins to doubt that he his who he claims to be.

Even though Gretchen\\\’s first husband was kind and lovig his brother was much stricter and had a very hard hand. This book had a couple plot twists that kept it very interesting and made you wonder if they book was going to end well which of course it did.

I found this book to be highly entertaining. The characters are strong and vibrant, each in their own way.
I loved the first description of Kane with his black cloak spreading open to catch the fainting Gretchen, and her thinking of him as a big black predatory bird. Loved that!
The whole plot in this book was great as the story unfolded and then developed into the fullness and fulfillment that kept the reader on edge and curious.
The story pulled me right into it. It made me feel for Gretchen and admire Kane. I felt resentment towards Archibald Blythe and was thrilled when he finally got his just rewards.
As others have also noted, the typo\\\’s were a little distracting, especially when Elsa tried to wiggle her way into the wrong story pretending to be Gretchen.
Great Job, Sullivan Clarke, I admire your imagination.

Awful, awful, awful. The story overview sounded good and chapter one was so good it sold me to the story. It was all downhill from there. Kane may have been strict, stern and authoritarian but I didn\\\’t find him likeable. He showed no affection. Some of the scenes in the story were over-the-top. There were so many errors running through it. Wrong use of names and even gender, like \\\’he\\\’ instead of \\\’her\\\’ occurred frequently. There were also not just typos but completely wrong words that sounded similar to what the correct word should have been which made me think the story was created using voice recognition software and no one proofread it. Disappointing.

This story made me cringe and I was so furious for a big portion of it… but I just couldn\\\’t put it down. I absolutely hated the male lead and didn\\\’t trust him one single bit. However… somewhere along the way (and I don\\\’t know how Clarke does it), I was pulled in and started routing for him.

I really enjoyed this one!! It flowed well and made sense. I could see this really happening, not just being some random spanking story. I loved her spunk and that he ended up supporting that. I think that is really one of the things I most love in books is when the man is strong enough and man enough to admit when the woman is right and seeing that part of his role as HOH is encouraing her gifts and talents! 🙂

During the first half of this book, it seems impossible to believe that the male lead, Kane will ever become sympathetic. He seems such an unlikeable cad, having swooped in and demanded that his brother’s widow, Gretchen, marry him (on the day of her husband’s funeral, no less) threatening to take her son away of she doesn’t obey. Amazingly Sullivan Clarke handles the story so well that both characters change and develop in a realistic way which enables the reader to understand better why Kane is like he is. Gretchen’s midwifery career is nicely woven into the plot and provides a real depth to her character that works well in the story’s historical and geographical context. The spanking’s are nicely handled, too. Even at his worst, Kane is quite, deliciously sexy. The one quibble I have with the book is its characters’ names. The heroine is supposed to come from an Irish family. That being the case, I am not sure why she’s called Gretchen and her son is called Owen. Both names are about as Irish as, say, ‘Sanjay’ or ‘Ludwig’. Not a big deal though. Overall this was a very enjoyable read.

This is a lovely story. Marvelous plot and characters. Kane is not always an easy man to like, but you do anyway. Gretchen is also an outstanding character. I like how their are subtle references throughout the story about what a woman has to offer an man and how strong she becomes as a mother. Perfect moral and story.
