Chapter One

Mid-November, 1876

An invitation from Polly

Katie Adams stood in front of the window looking out at the dreary November day, wishing she was home. The opened envelope still in her hand, she wandered over to her bed and sat down, her face saddened.  She read the letter inside and glanced up at Lizzie, her roommate, frowning.

Katie? What is it? You look like youve received bad news. Lizzie sat down on the bed next to her, tossing her red curls back behind her.

Katie was re-reading it, and the expression on her face saddened even more. Its a note from Polly, wanting to know if well be home from college in time for the wedding.

Well make it in time. My big brother wouldnt dare get married without me there. Id never forgive him. She tilted her head to one side. But thats not what has you upset. What else did she say?

Katie turned, meeting her gaze. She said that Nick is engaged to a girl named Phebe Watson. Isnt she the girl who comes every year to spend a month or two with the Andrews? Apparently, now, shes broken it off. Katie realized her voice sounded disparaging, but she couldnt help it. Lizzie, why didnt you tell me about this? You know how I feel about Nick.

Lizzies face grew rueful. Im sorry, Katie. I should have. I just didnt know how. I only got my mothers letter last week, and I couldnt bring myself to tell you, simply because I do know how you feel about him.

Katie blinked and shook her head but didnt take her eyes from Lizzies. Poor Nick.

Poor Nick will be just fine, Katie. Mother said that everyone in the household was relieved that the wedding was off. She even said Nick was, as well.

Katie continued staring. You still could have told me.

Im sorry. But its off, Katie. Dont you understand? I think it had to be the shortest engagement in the history of Strasburg. And its probably the talk of the town.

So says Polly. Katie stood to her feet and threw the invitation onto the bed, pacing.

Lizzie watched her, quiet for a while. Finally, she said softly, You know, if youd given him the least indication that you cared

Oh, stop. Katies eyes were flashing. If hed given me the least indication that he cared, I would have. I refuse to go chasing after him like a schoolgirl.

A schoolgirl? Lizzies eyes widened. Youre twenty-two.

And so are you. Were in college, Lizzie. Were not children any longer. We dont go having flings and batting our eyes and— She shook her head and turned away, facing the vanity. Dark auburn hair and bright blue eyes stormed back at her. She realized how angry she appeared. Lizzies reflection stared back at her in the mirror, hurt.

A small sigh escaped. Im sorry, Lizzie. I didnt mean to be snippy.

Its all right. I understand. And youre right; I should have told you before now. At least now you know.

A nod from Katie followed. What I started to say was twentytwoyearolds should be able to figure out what lasting love is. Ive had Nick in my heart for so many years now She moved, trying to keep Lizzie from seeing the tear that trickled down her cheek.

If its any consolation to you, Katie, hes had you in his, too.

Right. So much so that hes managed to avoid me for the last year and asked someone else to marry him. She straightened her shoulders and shook her head. Im sorry. Is he going to be in Pollys wedding? We missed Cicelys. I hate that.

The answer? I dont know. Nick and Geoff are trying to talk each other into overseeing Pembroke so Father and Mother can go abroad. But Geoff wont agree, and neither will Nick. I suppose I could do it, but I wont.

Why dont you? Youll finish college next spring. Youd manage it well.

Because I have no desire to. Besides, Geoff is the eldest son. It falls to him by right. I love my family, and I love Pembroke. But Ive no wish whatsoever to run it. And I really dont know for sure that I want to return to Strasburg.

Katie gasped. You never told me that!

Well, I dont. And you dont, either, if youll be honest with yourself.

Katies glare was intense. She finally averted her gaze and walked toward the window.

Perhaps I do, she said softly. Perhaps I dont. Ive always thought I might, if Nick was going to be there. But now…

Now is as good a time as any to see him, Katie, and you know it.

A shake of her head answered, and she sighed. I dont know. She raised her head at the sound of the supper bell and started toward the door.

Anyway, Lizzies voice caught her at the door. Father and Mother are home right now, and theyre sending a carriage for us next weekend. And another semester will be over.

Areeither of them coming?

I doubt it. If anyone comes with it, itll be Nick. Geoff is up to his ears in wedding plans, and he doesnt want to tear himself away from Polly.

Katie frowned. I wont go if Nick comes. Ill spend Christmas here.

Lizzies brow rose. And miss spending Christmas with your family? Ill pay money to hear you tell that to Nick. Hell haul you out to the carriage before you get the words out of your mouth.

Then get your money ready, Lizzie, because I will.

Lizzie laughed. Sure you will.

Ive no desire to spend four days in a carriage with him.

Lizzie only grinned and rose, passing Katie on the way to the door. Ready for supper?

Katie rolled her eyes. She couldnt stay angry with Lizzie for long. Grinning back, she nodded. Lets go.

The trip home

Since the arrival of Pollys invitation, Katie had been extremely quiet. All she could think of was the letter from Polly, telling her that Nick had proposed to another woman. Was he terribly upset because she had changed her mind? Her heart was saddened for him. At the same time, she was angry as hell that hed asked someone else. Had she, Katie, been so unimportant to Nick that he never thought of her at all?

A myriad of things bounced about in her head. She was relieved he was free again. She was upset that it had happened. She wanted to throttle him because hed gotten engaged without telling her. All of it had caused unrest, and shed slept extremely poorly.

I wish I knew when theyd get here, Lizzie murmured, staring out the window.

I wish I knew who was coming, Katie said in a worried voice behind her.

Well, keep pacing. Lizzie chuckled. Im sure itll make him arrive faster, no matter who it is.

Katie made a face at her and Lizzie added, The bath calls. Ill be back.

Shed only been absent a moment, however, when there was a knock on the door.

Come in, please. Katie turned. The trunks were set next to the door, and she slid one of them over to make room to get it all the way open. Oh! Hello, Miss Ophelia.

The young woman in charge of the womens hall came in. Her arms went instantly around Katies neck. A gentleman is waiting in the lounge to pick you up, Katie. And Lizzie, too. She glanced around the room Where is she?

In the bath. Shell be right back.

May I help you get your cases down to the lounge?

Katies mouth was suddenly dry. Did hesay what his name was?

Ophelia smiled. No. But he has wavy dark hair and brown eyes that look like they have silver in them. I assured him youd hurry.

The description could have meant either Geoffrey Francis or Nick. Katie muttered under her breath. Right.

He does seem impatient.

Katie scowled. It had to be Nick. Let him wait.

Katie? An expression of uncertainty in the young womans face caused her to turn. Are you all right?

No. She shook her head. Yes. Im all right. But I can be as impatient as he can.

For a moment, she sat down on her trunk but, after a bit, thought better of it. She began to slowly drag one trunk down the hall, just as Lizzie caught up with them and helped Ophelia with the second.

Suddenly, a large hand descended on top of Katies as she neared the other end of the hall. She glanced up and gasped. She was staring straight up into the silver brown eyes of Nicholas George Wellington.

Hello, young lady. His eyes were crinkling with amusement at the corners.

Katie jerked her hand out from under his and straightened, her shoulders stiff. Hello.

Nicholas raised an eyebrow at her and spoke in a deep voice that held a hint of warning. Katie?

But Lizzie broke the tension by jumping into her brothers arms and nearly knocking him over.

Nick! Weve missed you!

Whoa, Lizzie. Good to see you, too.

Im so glad its you who came for us. I want to hear everything about whats happening at home. Geoff wouldnt tell me if hed come.

He grinned and glanced down at Katie once again, curiously. There will be plenty of time on the way home. Relax. Lifting Katies trunk easily in one hand, he reached for the other. Allow me, miss.

Ophelia stood back, her face turning a shade of pink as he disappeared down the hall and out the door with their cases.

Lizzie glanced down toward Katie and shook her head. I swear, Katie. You can be as stubborn as you want, but itll be at your own risk. He doesnt even let me get away with acting like that.

Katie ignored her and turned toward Ophelia, hugging her. Please have a perfect Christmas, Miss Ophelia. Well be back in February.

It will be awfully quiet here over the holidays. Well miss you both.

Lizzie hugged her and bounced down the hall in search of her brother.

Katie grinned and said, I wish you could come with us.

Perhaps someday. Youre lucky. Not all the girls get to go home over the holidays. Enjoy it.

Katie left Ophelia at the door and approached the carriage. Lizzie was outside, affectionately hugging her brother, and kissed his cheek right before he lifted her into the carriage.

But when he turned to lift Katie in, she moved away from him. I can do it myself, thank you.

Id like to see it, he drawled goodnaturedly, adding, Short stuff.

It was a name hed used for her as a child, and not one she particularly liked. She raised her foot as high as she could to try to step into the carriage, but it was too high. She tried again. When she glanced up at Nick, he was laughing.

She scowled up into his face. Wheres the step?

Under it, and its stuck. Get it out if you can. I cant.

Nick reached for her waist. When she jerked away from him again, his expression faded into a frown. He reached out and took her by the shoulders, turning her to face him. Kaitlynne. His voice was low and threatening. Whats gotten into you?

Her full name on his lips gave her pause. Hed never called her that except when she was in trouble with him. Nothing. She attempted to free herself from his grasp, and he turned her slightly away from him and planted a hard swat on her bottom.

Katies gasp was louder than she intended. From the corner of her eye, she saw Ophelias hand fly to her mouth.

But Nick stopped only after delivering three more swats. Then he held her still, as he leaned down close to her ear. You should know I wont tolerate that kind of behavior from you. Ill ride topside for a while. But when we stop, Ill expect an explanation for your state of pique. And Ill expect you to make it with a tone of respect.

Katie found herself lifted into the carriage and heard the door close behind her. In a second, he was gone. She sat down in the seat across from Lizzie and lowered her head.

I told you, Lizzie murmured. Nick wont put up with that.

Katie nodded sadly, her eyes misting. Of all people, I should know.

Katies Maverick the Strasburg, the new generation book 2 by Pippa Greathouse
This is book two in this series but you do not have to read book one to read this story. It is a stand alone.
Katie Adams is at school with her friend, Lizzie. She was in love with Lizzies brother Nick. He overheard Katie was getting married so he stayed away. This wasn%u2019t true but he didn%u2019t know that. Katie found out Nick made a very big mistake by becoming engaged to Phebe. It was broken off very quickly. This misunderstanding causes problems. They both love one another but things keep getting in the way. Katie doesn%u2019t like getting spanked but Nick believes in domestic discipline. This is a very cute and interesting book. I enjoyed it very much.

Katie’s Maverick is the second book of the Strasburg, The New Generation series. The book is a stand-alone, but I would recommend to read ‘Judging Cicely’ first because you will also meet Cicely and Abel in this book again, which I absolutely do not mind because I loved Cicely and Abel. Of course, I also fell in love with Katie and Nick, they are an adorable couple. Miss Greathouse always manages to bring the characters alive, the story is well written and the plot engaging. I loved reading this story very much.

Pippa Greathouse just added another hit book to the series, Strasburg: The New Generation! The story was well written and can be read as a standalone, but I enjoyed knowing the characters from past books. You will see old friends, some you will like and some you will love to hate. The plot is interesting and one that many can relate to. Misunderstandings between couples can waste time and bring misery, but together can usually be fixed, just as Katie and Nick’s relationship needed to be. The love story is sweet and kept my interest with some laughs, friendships, a lot of love, and with discipline scenes believable and true to the time period. I could not have asked for more in this captivating book. Overall, I highly recommend this story for a great night’s read! I voluntarily received an arc copy of this book.

I love reading about the town of Strasburg! I liked both Katie and Nick but I was surprised at the pairing. I%u2019ve read all the previous books and I thought that Katie would end up with Thomas based on their personalities. Nick is great but he was previously engaged and I, like Katie was a bit put out with him about that but it did add some interesting drama. In the end I fell in love with Katie and Nick and enjoyed watching them fall in love, It was also nice to see other residents of Strasburg and I cannot wait to read more. This is a great small town historical romance with lots of love and discipline.
I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

  5. Martha

This is a sweet, slightly naughty, historical romance about two people who are secretly in love but haven’t worked up the nerve to say anything. Their hesitance almost keeps them apart. Nick and Katie truly care for one another, and their friendship and familiarity sets a solid foundation for their burgeoning romance to bloom. This isn’t Insta-love. They’ve grown up together. Nick’s little sister is her BFF. This is a low heat story. While there are some spanking scenes, it isn’t very explicit, and there aren’t any real sex scenes.

I like that this is a historical romance that isn’t set in England or the Old West. It’s a wonderful little story with engaging, interesting characters who aren’t shrill or boorish. They’re smart, caring and don’t act like idiots. Well, Katie has a few moments where she acts impulsively (not petulantly or like a brat). It’s a temporary leave of senses– not a personality trait and gives Nick the opportunity to take her in hand. He bares his soul to Katie, revealing his feelings in a way that isn’t common in these stories. That sets the stage for Katie to learn to trust Nick.

  6. Redrabbitt

Katie Adams has been in love with Nick Wellington for years, always believing they would one day marry. What a shock to learn that he had been engaged to a Miss Phebe Watson. Even though she broke the engagement, it is the fact that he asked someone else to marry him. How will she face him, much less go back to Strasburg for his brother%u2019s wedding? How could Lizzie, her roommate and best friend not tell her Nick had been engaged?

The plot will have Nick coming to pick up his sister, Lizzie, and friend, Katie from school, to escort them home for the winter break. Katie is so hurt, and she tries to ignore him after learning he had been engaged. They will be weather issues on the trip home that will have them stopping for several days due to whiteout conditions. Nicholas is a man who expects to be obeyed, and there will be several incidences along the way where Kaitlynne will try to get around his orders, one that was a matter of life and death. Eventually, several misunderstandings and assumptions will be revealed.

Arriving back in Strasburg will not have things settled completely. Every time that Nick and Katie seem to make headway, something happens. Her temper and harsh words are about to drive him away and when they get over that, they Phebe stirs the pot again. The green-eyed monster, jealousy, play a big part in this story, as does her impetuous behavior. Nicholas will set rules for how things need to be in their relationship leading to marriage, with honesty, obedience, and safety.

While in town making arrangements for their wedding, another blizzard will hit the town, and it will take the efforts and teamwork on many to make arrangements for the safety of the residence, especially the elderly, widows, and those with needs. The church will become a central hub, and both Nick and Katie will work tirelessly to help the people, proving to be Good Samaritans. But once again, trouble is on the way when they bring the women from the dormitory to the church, because that will include Phebe.

The story will have some surprises, and a couple of widowed sisters that are a hoot and maybe will help save the day. There are several spanking scenes and a few sex scenes after marriage. I look forward to the next book in the series.

5.0 out of 5 starsTogether Against All Odds
    ByDonna Lon April 4, 2018
    Format: Kindle Edition
I impatiently waited for the release of this book and it met all my expectations and
then some. What a great start to a new series,a spin off from the good people of
Strasburg. It was like coming home to my own family and friends, with all its ups
and downs. This is a sweet romance which definitely did not run smoothly,it was
bursting at the seems with chaos, misunderstandings and eccentric characters.
Kaitlynne Adam’s heart is broken, she receives a letter from home with devastating
news. The man of her dreams, her one true love, has broken off his engagement to
another woman. What was worse,Katie did not even know Nick was engaged, she
is shattered and betrayed.Katie Adams had a special place in Nicholas Wellington’s
heart,he thought they had a future together, but Katie gave no indication of her feelings
for him at her last visit home.Nick new immediately that he had made a huge mistake
asking Miss Phoebe Watson to marry him.Nick was relieved, when she very publically
ended their engagement. What Nick was not happy with, was the blatant disrespect
and rudeness from Kaitlynne. He was determined to find out what was troubling Katie,
on or over his knees. On their journey home from College, with Nick as their escort, they
need to delay their journey due to bad weather.Nick is cautious and finds accommodation
at a Inn until It clears.Katie disobeyed Nicks orders and puts herself in danger. All she wanted
to do was to see the new baby lambs, except she ended up lost in a snow storm. After
Nick rescues Katie,he spanked her hard. They have waisted time apart and now intend
to make the best of their time together.Nick is sure of his feelings but jealousy and doubt
plague their relationship.Katie’s tends to think the worst of Nick, especially when Phoebe
Watson returns to town. This book so many memorable moments that is hard to pick a
favorite.Nick was a stern but loving man, he expected complete obedience from Katie,
and did she pay the price, when she foolishly disobeyed him.The good people of Strasburg,
pulled together as usual, in times of need.It was great to read how Katie and Nick reconnected
against all odds, there was never a dull moment.I loved the dynamics between Kaitlynne and
Nick, their love shone through every obstacles put in their way.Every time they faced drama,
or a life threatening situation, another one would pop up.There is never a dull moment in this
book. The emotional journey that brought Kaitlynne and Nicholas together was heartwarming.
The story includes danger, jealousy, romance, snow storms ,devious ex- fianc? and well deserved
    spankings with hand and belt.

Another great book in the Strasburg series! Nick and Katie have quite a romance story. Katie is mad at Nick when he comes to pick up her and his sister from school to take them home. She is going to have to spend days with him in the carriage and the spankings start pretty quick when her attitude and disobedience get her in trouble! They have several problems with his ex-fianc? (Phebe Watson) throughout the book. I like the way Nick is very protective of Katie especially around Phebe, there is humor, alpha males, very well-written witty dialogue, families from the other books, learning to trust and learning to forgive. Enjoyed this book!!! 5 Huge Stars

  10. Ajjmb

Katie%u2019s Maverick is part of the new generation of Strasbourg that are falling in love and getting married. I have thorough enjoyed each of Pippa Greathouse%u2019s books in this series. Now we get to enjoy seeing the children of the first generation of books get together. These books are very sweet and yet the men are always very strict. I get goosebumps just reading about them. My only suggestion is that the author start including a family tree and who is married to who in each book because I am beginning to loose track of all the wonderful characters. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.

  11. Lillie322

I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book. Katie and her best friend Lizzie’s brother Nick have been waiting for each other. At least that’s what Katie thought until it got back to her that he was engaged. Now it’s the holidays and she is expected home and she is traveling with Nick and Lizzie. Nick believes in spanking and she is his favorite target. Historical spanking romance.

  12. Great bedtime reading

Next adventure set in Strasburg is a great read.Katie has had her heartbroken when she hears that her childhood sweetheart has become engaged to another woman-a frivolous, self-centered but beautiful woman. How can she go home for the holidays when she will be constantly bumping into him as both their families practically live in each others pockets? Nick Wellington only got engaged when he thought Katie was going to be offered for and therefore out of his reach. But now that he’s broken off his engagement, nothing is going to stop him pursuing his objective even if his caring brings out his punishing hand to show he loves and cares for her in every way.

  13. Sam

I really enjoyed reading this book. We get to see more of the characters from the previous book in this series plus these are the children of the characters from the original Strasburg series. This allows for a lot of background knowledge which makes the stories seem fuller. I really enjoy reading books of this type. The characters in this book have to overcome a few misunderstandings to find their happy ending. I really liked how romantic this story was.
