When the witch hunter arrives, the only way to secure her freedom may come through the capture of her heart…

Beautiful Lark Willoughby has lived in peace with her Christian relatives for years, despite the fact that she follows the Old Ways. As the village healer, her services are needed and so her neighbors quietly tolerate her faith and love her for her kind, caring manner. But when she spurns the advances of the village butcher, his spiteful mother accuses Lark of witchcraft.

When a notorious witchhunter descends on the village to try Lark, her longtime friend Colin MacGregor is determined to save her. But first he has to convince the wilfull witch that she must listen to him, even if that means putting her over his knee to do it.

I enjoy this author and I liked this book but it did feel that the end was a bit rushed.

This book was good but not the best SC has ever written. The story just didn\\\’t really grab me but overall it wasn\\\’t bad just not as interesting as some have been.

Well-written enough, but NOT well-edited. Not only are there typos, but halfway through the book, a bunch of names change (Reverend Fordham becomes Rev. Fervor, Rev. Pratt becomes Rev. Fordham, and Gertrude Hatch becomes Gertrude Pratt…). Aside from the resulting confusion, this sort of mistake strikes me (as an editor myself) as both sloppy and lazy. Moving on, the story itself was generally compelling, but there were two things that bothered me. First, the hero doesn’t really seem to get the heroine’s genuine objections to marriage. Second, the heroine ignores a magical sign of danger (or at least waits too long to heed it) early in the book, and this is a bad thing; however, later in the book, she follows a magical sign (to escape), and this turns out to be a bad thing, too, which doesn’t really follow. So, overall, while it was a mostly enjoyable read (barring the editorial mistakes), it didn’t leave me satisfied.

This is a nice story even if it is not one of my favorites but it is worth reading. Yes there are a few name changes thru the book but once you get past that the story is nice just not exceptional.

A good witch committing good acts is threatened by the harsh law and fear of the land. A lifelong friend becomes her protector. The premise of this story was a good one, but it was never nurtured to fruition. Too many scenes were slipshod. Clarke usually produces strong work, but this one was published long before it was polished to completion. Sad, because Clarke is usually one of the dependable authors.

I thought the idea behind the plot was good but the book is not edited well. Lots of names changes gets a little confusing.
