Elspeth McDonald travels from her native Scotland to the new world with intentions of working for a widow until her fare is paid and she can start a new life. But she arrives to find an entirely different plan awaits. The widow she was to serve has died from an illness that swept the village,  and she learns she will be pressed into the service of Clifford Harker, a taciturn businessman who lost his wife and now faces raising his two young sons alone.

Elspeth is not prepared for Harker’s coldness, nor is she prepared for how strict he is. If she disappoints him or fails to obey in any way, he is quick to correct her physically. Elspeth senses his firmness comes from more than just convictions and when she realizes that he blames himself for his wife’s death, she seeks to reach him and heal his broken family.

But will he accept a fiery woman from another land whose will is as strong as his own?

Good book! I loved Elspeth she was such a great character and the children were adorable. It was sad but had a happy ending. I would like to see more of Clifford and Elspeth\\\’s relationship, the ending was a bit sudden.

A beautiful love story set in the hard life of the colonial period. The novel is very well written, the description of the daily life of that period is very detailed and the characters are well developed. It reads nicely several times, I would have liked a less hasty end.

What a wonderful story with memorable characters. I absolutely loved it but I wish the ending was as detailed as the rest. It felt really rushed.

A nice if predictable spanking romance. The male lead is too cold and flips too quickly to warm. The female lead is first said to be Scottish, then halfway through becomes Irish for no particular reason. It\\\’s said that there is so little Christianity in her rural birthplace that she hardly knows what it is — but then that the local priest is the only literate resident. These sort of inconsistencies detract from the story.

I always complain about the proof reading but apparently it doesn\\\’t bother me much because I keep buying these books. This was another great story but 350 pages into it Elspeth\\\’s mationality changed. Right after that she had told Clifford her mother died when she was a child but now she is wearing a dress her mother made for her. Very confusing!

I felt as though this is a less common time period, and I enjoyed it. I wish there woulf have been a bit more of family element, but as far as a contract type story, it was good.

This is a good story set in the colonial times where a young girl is pressed into service of a widower who has two sons. She of course gets into lots of trouble with her strict new boss and he his quick to take it out on her backside. Good love story even if there are a few inconsistancies in the story.

Elspeth comes to America as an indentured servant and instead of being placed in the household she was intended, she gets placed with a Widower and his two young sons. Harker\\\’s heart is hardened and resists the love he feels for Elspeth.

I wondered if Mr. Butthead was ever going to get a clue and stop being so mean to Elspeth. Finally, he did! This reminded me of the romance novels of yore. He was oblivious, she was ready. She changed get mind, he was ready. Great story!

This is a good colonial story with a tough hero who has hardened his heart adn a young girl who has been pressed into service working for him and taking care of his two boys. These two sure knocked heads several times but it sure was fun to see the sparks fly.

Although this is a very harsh story in the beginning it is well developed into a good plot. The characters are also well developed and it clearly shows the hero\\\’s journey from great grief to falling in love. The heroine is a wonderful character who is strong yet very vulnerable. I couldn\\\’t put this book down till I was finished. Well written!!!
