After her husband loses his life for the Confederate cause, 33-year-old Charlotte Steele finds herself having gone from beloved wife and plantation mistress to war widow.

It’s lean times for her and what remains of her household, and without an able man to provide for them, Charlotte decides she must assume the role. After all, tough times call for strength and she fuels that strength with anger directed at her late husband – who enlisted despite her pleas not to – and the faceless enemy who killed him.

But Charlotte’s strength is tested when runs into Sgt. Nathan Bane, a Union soldier who will challenge not only her newfound need to maintain control but also her vow to hate anyone north of the Mason Dixon line.

I really enjoyed the first two-thirds of this book but I am giving it only 3 stars because I felt that the last one-third of the book was too rushed. In the first part of the book, Charlotte’s and Nathan’s characters are well developed and I was looking forward to more interaction between the two main characters but before I knew it the story was already being wrapped up. Another reason for the three stars is that during the climax of the story there is a mention of a kiss that never happened and Charlotte’s friend Sue is referred to as Sally. Maybe the author edited out the kissing scene which would have fleshed out the story more satisfactorily for me. My confusion about the missing kiss and the name change distracted me from the climax of the story.

This was such a good story and it almost got lost for me as the editing and proofing was done so poorly, I really like the main characters and could imagine scenes like these during the Civil War. I had to keep stopping and rereading to figure out what was actually happening.

I enjoyed the story. The Civil War backdrop was a great setting. The effects of the war on those in the front and the plight of those left at home. I would recommend.

This was a veryu nice civil war novel about a man looking for redemption when he realizes that the woman he has to come to care about is a widow because of him. This story in turn sad and wonderful at the same time. I was very glad this ended with a HEA for all concerned.

This was a great book. I love historicals and have always enjoyed Sullivan Clarke\\\’s work – this one is no different. Charlotte meets her match in Nathan. She doesn\\\’t want to trust him and is very distrustful – definitely normal for a Southern Belle forced to survive until a Yankee shows up to take over. I will definitely be reading this book again. The story was great and I would have rated it as a 5 if the editing had been better. There were mistakes that slightly distracted. I was able to get back into the story but shouldn\\\’t have had to have been derailed in the first place.

A great story packed with emotion and a happy ending. There was a nice relationship between \\\’mistress\\\’ and \\\’servant\\\’ with much deeper feelings

Ahhhh…Ms. Faulkner does it again. Fantastic plot. I loved the characters in this story. Normally, I would like more spankings but there was so much in this story, I didn\\\’t miss it.

This was a good read. I enjoyed the play between the characters. The story has a purpose even if it did manage to bring a tear or two.

I can\\\’t say I liked this one. I can easily understand Charlotte\\\’s resentment of Bane, he comes in to her home and takes over, spanks her for not following his rules, rapes her and then forces her to marry him. I didn\\\’t see any real love between them. Not my idea kind of book.
