The splattering of rain on the windshield turned into a torrential downpour, and she hoped her wipers could keep up with the frequency and volume of water surging from the sky. She looked in the rearview mirror at the beautiful, sleeping girl in the back seat. The child was her motivation, her reason for fighting back. The pitch blackness all around her reminded her of his soul. There was not a light on the road nor in the sky; it was so dark that even the mountains were hidden from view. Escaping was her priority; she had to get away as quickly as possible. A few hours ago, the courts had awarded her an order of protection, but she knew the order wouldn’t stop him. The monster wouldn’t hesitate to walk right through the flimsy piece of paper that sat in the seat next to her. If anything, he would be infuriated and spurred on by the decree. She knew the second that he was served would be the second that he would come looking for her.

Her eyes darted back and forth across the road, scanning for other cars and checking the rearview mirror obsessively, afraid she was being followed. She hadn’t seen another set of headlights for at least five miles. Her heart was racing. Her anxiety, mingled with trepidation, prevented her from being able to slow down the fast thumping of her heart in her chest. The beat of the bass drum that was her pulse sounded loudly in her ears. She wiped her palms on her pants for the third time in ten minutes, drying the sweat from them. With a white knuckled grasp on her steering wheel, she checked her speed and slowed down. She had to escape him but not by killing them in a car accident. What good would it be if she escaped her death at his hands just to die at her own? A destination hadn’t been determined; she wasn’t yet sure where she was going. All she knew was she had to get away from him.

Across the highway, a car came into view. She watched it, waiting for it to pass her so she could let out the breath she was now holding. Her eyes grew large when she saw it start to drive across the median and head straight towards them. Instinctively, she hit the gas and jerked the wheel to the right, driving onto the shoulder of the highway. If her calculations were right, the car should miss hitting them and drive right behind their car and off of the road into the grass field beyond.

She watched in horror as the car corrected course to her new location. The beams of light grew brighter, blinding her, as the vehicle rushed towards them. Crash! The sound of metal hitting metal filled her ears as her body jerked forward, her head slamming into the steering wheel upon impact. The squeaking of the car door opening revealed his figure and she knew he had found her. She painfully lifted her head, her gaze going to the large rock in his hands. Her eyes widened in terror, her lips parted to beg for mercy, but before the first word could escape and make her pleas known, his arm rose, and everything went black.

* * *

The buzzing sound in the distance woke her, but she was slow to open her eyes or move. Her head was throbbing like a sorority girl on a Monday morning after a weekend of pounding wine coolers and vodka. The buzzing in the distance wasn’t helping her headache. The intensity of the pain made her thoughts foggy. She shivered as she felt air from a fan hit her face and bare arms. The cold hard ground pressing into her legs added to her discomfort. Goose bumps rose over her exposed flesh; she wasn’t sure if they were caused by the temperature or the feeling of dread that was pooled like a rock in the bottom of her stomach. Ouch! The pain in the back of her head grabbed her attention, her hand going to it. The large, golf ball sized knot was hard to miss and the warm sticky residue in her hair transferred to her hand. Without opening her eyes, she knew it was blood. Something wasn’t right. Where was she? How did she get here?

Finally, she opened her eyes, quickly regretting it when the light above her stabbed into her eyeballs like the sharp ends of icicles falling off her grandpa’s porch roof in the winter. She squeezed her eyes closed tightly again and, taking a deep breath, reopened them. She stared directly ahead at the wall while allowing the room to come into focus. The task took longer than she would have liked. The initial stabbing sensation dulled some, but the room continued to spin in circles. She fought back bile rising in her throat and knew instinctively that she had a concussion. Her chest rose and fell as she sucked air in through her nose and out through her mouth using a technique she had mastered to keep from hyperventilating. She was seconds away from having an anxiety attack. Breathe. Assess. Attack. Breathe. Assess. Attack. Years of panic attacks had taught her how to formulate a survival plan. Breathe and get your heart rate under control. Assess the situation. Formulate an attack strategy to overcome the obstacle. Breathe. Assess. Attack.

The rock in her stomach turned into a boulder as the sound of his laughter sent terror down her spine. She raised her head towards the sound. Her cries of pain as she turned her neck permeating the room. Her hand flew up to her mouth, squashing the noise. She knew how her pain fueled his lust. At the sounds of her cries, his lips turned up into the snarl she was all too familiar with. She wanted to slap the look of satisfaction off of his face. His eyes darkened, his lips pressed together, and his eyebrows rose as his gaze raked over her body.

Her fight, flight or freeze instinct kicked in, and she put her hands on the ground beside her, willing herself the energy to push herself to stand. The clinking sound and the heavy weight on her ankle drew her gaze downward at the links imprisoning her to this place, following the chain’s path to a cemented anchor in the ground. Her eyes darted around the room then, fully taking in the surroundings of her personal cell. The buzzing was coming from the generator she had bought for their house after one too many snow storms had knocked out the power. She recognized the large metal fans that were circulating the air around the room—she had bought them for her art studio. The walls looked to be metal or aluminum, and she knew instantly what he had done. He had spoken many times over the years about making tiny homes out of storage sheds. He had promised to make one in the backyard for Lindsey as a playhouse.

“This is all your fault, you know. You defied me one too many times. Stupid girl. If only you had been reasonable and listened to me, you wouldn’t be here now. If only you had done what you were told. Why did you have to defy me? Why did you have to run? Nothing will keep me from what is mine. There is no judge, no piece of paper, nothing and no one that can stop me.”

“Lindsey! Where is Lindsey?” she screamed at the figure now standing next to her.

“I warned you. I fucking warned you. You never learn!” He raised his arm and slapped her hard across her left cheek, her face whipping to the side from the impact. “Maybe, now, you will see that I am a man of my word!” He laughed that evil laugh that haunted her nightmares. She watched him walk to the door.

“Better make yourself at home. You are going to be here for a very long time.” Click. Click. Click. Three locks. There was not one but three locks on her prison. He was tempting nothing. Terror shot through her.

There is so much to like about this short story, but there are also a few troubling issues dealt with. First and foremost, this is a well written story about a couple in a Domestic Discipline relationship. As Addie said, “there is a difference between a Master/slave and a Dominant/submissive relationship….I want to be in a domestic discipline” Once both she and Brad agree on this their relationship blooms. A loving spanking romance ensues, not without a few bumps and grinds, but they get through them all in great style. A warning to readers, there are a few potential trigger issues in the story dealing with body shaming, domestic violence and threatened child abuse. Nothing that isn’t properly dealt with, but be forewarned. 4 Stars.
I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

    Adjusting Addie by RJ Gray
Addie is a social worker and she loves her job helping the children. Dr. Bradley meets her while exercising. Addie will do her job whether it puts her in danger or not. She is feisty and will fight for her kids. Dr. Bradley loves her but has his hands full keeping her safe. Addie earns some punishments but she knows her man loves her and is only trying to protect her. This book will tug at your heartstrings. It has danger and a dangerous man. I loved every word of this book and you will too

Read on Booksprout as part of ARC program. Does not affect my reviews.

I loved this book. It was awesome to have a plus sized heroine to read about. Addie had just the right amount of sass. I do think a trigger warning would be good for it because I wasn’t prepared for the beginning scenes. There is domestic violence in the book. Otherwise, I think it was fantastic and I would highly recommend it. I noticed RJ Gray has another book and I missed that one so I am going to go read it as well. Defintely one of my new favorite authors.

  4. Marybeth

I loved this book!!! Addie is a plus sized woman who meets her future at the YMCA while starting a regimen to get more physically healthy. Brad is Addie’s future who happens to be a former marine and is currently a chiropractor. Addie is a social worker who does her best to protect the children in her care. While doing that, her life is put into danger. Brad brings up domestic discipline and Addie agrees.

There are a few areas that I will warn you about. In the prologue, a women gets taken by her husband and locked away. Then, there is verbal abuse to Addie from the man who has taken and hidden away his wife. If this bothers you, please do not read this book!

There is a satisfying HEA and I hope to read Annie’s story soon!

Wow, what an amazing, page-turning story that held me spellbound as it unfolds, with a great cast of characters, plenty of mystery, suspense, angst, and adventure. The chemistry between Brad and Addie is explosive from the beginning, and the more time they spend together, the more intense it becomes.

Addie is a social caseworker, was in the foster system as a child, and has so much compassion and understanding for the people, especially the children involved. She doesn’t have the best self-esteem, has a curvy body, is overweight, and has joined the YMCA fitness to work out and lose weight.

Chiropractor Brad Murphy works out each day at the YMCA and has been watching Addie, overhearing conversations, and becomes concerned when she nearly passes out in the cardio room for overdoing it. This will be the beginning of their relationship, which starts off rocky but will smooth out.

The plot will have Addie uncomfortable with one of her cases and the man who will have supervised visits with his daughter. The little girl is uneasy with him, and it just sets off alarm bells with Addie. But then other things start happening, things coming up missing at home, and Addie thinks she is just misplacing things. When Mr. Whitehall makes some startling statements, it will scare Addie, but luckily Brad will show up to the rescue𠅋ut he isn’t a happy man. This is the catalyst for the rest of the story that is suspenseful, edge-of-your-seat action.

Brad and Addie’s relationship will go from friends to a couple who include domestic discipline when he overhears her putting herself down again. Once their relationship changes, it will come with agreed-upon rules. When Brad worries about her safety and learns some things that have happened, he is upset with her for not telling him𠅋ut they talk things out, and he just wants to keep her safe.

The story makes you think about being aware of what goes on around you. It does have a stalker who is spying of Addie and takes on a life and death threat and situation. It is also a story of two people who fall in love and make a commitment to live a D/s relationship with discipline. I liked that it brings out that there are different types of spankings, and they aren’t all punishment, sometimes they are for stress release, and sometimes they are for pleasure. There are also mildly explicit sex scenes.

Addie is a social worker who attracts a stalker when she is working on a case. When things start happening, there is Brad who is determined to shelter and protect Addie. As they feel very attracted to each other, they enter into a relationship that includes d/s and discipline.

Wow, this was a great book. Addie and Brad are wonderful characters, they drew me in right from the beginning. I also liked the suspense and the danger and also the discipline scenes. It is a book I enjoyed reading from start to finish

This story is very easy to read and the characters were interesting with Addisyn “Addie” Gabriel a social worker and Dr. Bradley “Brad” Murphy a chiropractor and Dom. Brad teaches Addie what being in a domestic discipline relationship is all about at the same time keeping her safe. I was impressed by Addie’s bravery dealing with clients in her job. This book deals with love, honesty, conflicts, and risks and is thoroughly enjoyable to read.

I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.  A chiropractor and a social worker.   I really love this story because it’s my favorite kind. A straightforward domestic discipline romance. There’s a little danger, a little angst, but mostly the story of Addie and Brad’s new relationship.  Her need and acceptance of his love and very hard hand.  His ready acceptance of their love and her need for guidance.  Hand, spoon, belt.

  9. Maryanne

An intriguing, realistic story of Addie, a seemingly independent professional young woman, who discovers she has a submissive nature for the right man. Brad is a doctor his loving, firm guidance is her rock through the sometimes dangerous aspects of her job. When she becomes the target of a clever, manipulating stalker, Brad uses his former career as a marine to ensure her safety! A great read that kept me gripped from start to finish

  10. Lisa Watson

I really liked this book.  It is the story of Brad and Addisyn’s relationship.  Addisyn is a social worker and Brad is an ex marine.

One if her cases stalks her and she needs to protect little Lindsay from her father and find the mother who disappeared the day she got the restraining order.

Really good storyline and loved the dynamic between Brad and Addie.

Even though it has a HEA I still cried at the end because it was so emotional.

I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy for an honest review. I loved this book. It was well written and gripping. The characters were interesting and developed and the story line was great. I enjoyed the relationship building between the two characters and the DD theme. It was well done, realistic and a great read.

Adjusting Addie is a stand alone romance that will have you flipping pages! Addie is a social worker who is fiercely protective of the children she represents, but extra hard on herself. Brad is a former marine turned chiropractor and is intrigued by Addie as soon as he sees her. As they begin their relationship, he knows he only wants to keep her safe with no lies between them. But when a case turns dangerous, can they survive the fallout and keep each other safe?

This book was great and captured my attention right from the very beginning! I loved Addie and Brad, their domestic discipline relationship they form, and I couldn’t figure out if I was flipping through the pages to find out more about their relationship or about the dangers of her case! Addie was amazing with the children she protected, and I loved the easy bonds she could form with them. I enjoyed her drive, giggled over her sass, but cringed when that went too far. Brad was the perfect dominant for Addie, as he allowed her to still shine and be independent, but wouldn’t allow her to place herself into danger. I loved how his connections helped with the case, and since this is my first book from Ms. Gray, I want to go back and read Ben’s story, too! I really enjoyed the mystery of the book, with her case, and loved how everything played out in the ending. All in all, this book was really good, I loved Addie and Brad’s relationship, and look forward to more books from Ms. Gray!

  13. Pico1

Addie, a social worker, and Brad, a chiropractor, are two really wonderful people who meet at a gym and begin a relationship. The story of the development of their relationship – including loving episodes of domestic discipline – is interesting and fast moving, and is mixed with a mystery about the missing mother of one of Addie’s young clients. The dialog between Addie and Brad reflects their warmth and intelligence, and the story was really enjoyable.

  14. Lalaland

I enjoyed this book which was more of a domestic discipline tale than an erotic romance. Addie is a social worker who works mainly with families with an emphasis on children ie placement and fostering and return to the family home following a break etc. Brad is an ex marine who is now working as a successful chiropractor. They meet at the YMCA gym where Addie is working out to lose weight. As is her way, she is overdoing it and Brad sees that she is about to pass out from overexertion and stops her. Of course, Addie is not impressed and is very rude to Brad who is a Dom with itchy palms. Later the two of them do get together for something to eat and they realise there is chemistry between them. I enjoyed this story which was a quick easy read which kept me engaged from start to finish. There is a bit of a twist, a really evil villain and the main characters are warm and interesting. This is exactly what you want from a DD thriller romance, with quite a bit of spanking, some raunchy scenes although not gratuitous just very entertaining. Excellent. This was absolutely a well written and intense read. It does have spanking and sex, but that’s not what drew me in, to read this in one sitting. I do enjoy spanking books, but want an interesting, and also well thought out story. This will grip your heart and mind, motivating you to read until the finish. Definitely deserves 5 stars.

I love a good domestic discipline story and that is exactly what R.J.Gray
has brought us with Adjusting Addie. But this book explores so much
more with topics that are relevant and difficult to tackle.I think the
author was sensitive but did not shy away making this book not only
entertaining but dealt with issues many women face in today’s society.
Addie Gabriel was dedicated as a Social Worker but her life consisted
of work only.Addie is a curvy girl determined to lose weight. Her life
changes when she meets Brad Murphy at the gym.Addie can not believe
why he would be attracted to her but Brad is immediately drawn to
Addie.Brad is a dominant man and Addie desperately needs discipline
and someone to hold her accountable.Addie finds herself in trouble
many times and actually being disciplined is much more painful than
she imagined.I liked how Addie and Brad discussed and agreed on what
was important in their relationship and what rules they would follow.
This book captivated my attention as it’s more then just about discipline,
it’s about the emotional connection and journey between two people
from vastly different backgrounds starting out together and beating
    the odds.

I love crime and suspense and this story kept me on the edge of my seat. The suspense and thrill was great. I love how caring Brad is and he is such an alpha male character. Addie needs someone like Brad in her life. I loved the ending but I won’t reveal any details. It is a goody though. Great story. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.

  19. Toni

As far as I’m aware this is the first book that I’ve read from this author & I’m very pleased that I enjoyed it so much. I found myself involved in the characters & the story very quickly & easily & resented the times that I couldn’t spend with this book. The characters were great & the story very easy to read with a great underlying menace giving spice to the story. It was wonderful to read of a dominant man with such a sense of fun & humour.

  20. Barbara

This is a charming story of how Addie met Brad and how they each filled a need in the other. Brad is the strong dependable type who believes in domestic discipline. Addie has dreamt of being in a ‘spanking’ relationship and rather likes the idea of a man who takes charge. This is contrasted with a sub-plot of a violent man who has abused his wife and possibly his young daughter. In her role as a social worker, Addie tries to keep the child safe, putting herself in danger at the same time. An exciting end to an enjoyable story. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.

Adjusting Addie was well written and fun to read. The suspense kept me reading from start to finish. However, I really loved the characters of Brad and Addie. She was feisty and determined to help her client. Brad was protective and would keep her safe but still gave her the space to do what she needed to for her career. They were heartfelt and believable and drew me into their story. The spanking scenes were well placed and written nicely. Overall I love the book and give it a big 5 stars! I voluntarily received an arc copy of this book.
